In reaction to the CDC’s recent provision that allowed vaccinated Americans to choose whether or not to wear a mask and practice social distancing, stores that have previously required masks– Trader Joes, Walmart, and Costco– have dropped their mandates for vaccinated shoppers.
In a press release, Walmart executives stated, “vaccinated customers and members are welcome to shop without a mask.” Meanwhile, Walmart has asked that customers who have not received the vaccine continue to wear masks and practice social distancing. As well, Costco, in a press release, included that “We will allow members and guests who are fully vaccinated to enter Costco without a face mask or face shield.” However, Costco later expanded, saying, “Costco continues to recommend that all members and guests, especially those who are at higher risk, wear a mask or shield.”
Lastly, Trader Joes expressed a similar sentiment, saying that they would “encourage customers to follow the guidance of health officials, including, as appropriate, CDC guidelines that advise customers who are fully vaccinated are not required to wear masks while shopping.” Despite this, all three of the businesses noted that customers who had not been fully-vaccinated and all employees continued wearing masks and practicing social distancing. However, it’s unclear how this will be determined. Some have speculated that customers may require proof of vaccination in order to not wear a mask. Nonetheless, it will be revealed when these practices are employed on May 18th.
