Pelosi Narrowly Reelected House Speaker

Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi of California secured her fourth term as Speaker of the House of Representatives on Sunday afternoon when the 117th Congress, which will serve until 2023, convened for the first day of the new session in Washington, DC.

The Senate is Republican run, giving its members a platform to again air President Trump’s claims that his loss to Democrat Joe Biden was the result of voting fraud.

Multiple state and federal reviews have found no evidence of the sort of widespread fraud Trump claims, but Republican senators and House members plan to challenge the election result when Congress certifies it on Wednesday.

A Republican push led by Ted Cruz for an emergency 10-day audit of election results in contested battleground states drew criticism from Senator Lindsey Graham.

“Our most urgent priority will continue to be defeating the coronavirus — and defeat it we will,” said Pelosi, who referenced the passing of the recent COVID-19 relief package, which President Donald Trump signed into law back in late December.

All of the members of the progressive “Squad” voted for Pelosi, including the two newest members, Congresswoman Cori Bush and Congressman Jamal Bowman.

A Republican win of one or both Georgia Senate seats, would help Republicans maintain control of the senate.
