Cambridge scientists say humans need to eat more maggots, fungi to ‘future-proof’ our food supply.

A recent report published by the University of Cambridge Centre for the Study of Existential Risk says that the future fix for global malnutrition is foods made with maggots, algae, fungi, and mealworms. Of course, they will not be eaten whole but rather as a byproduct and as a key ingredient for existing meal types. This recent report was published in the Nature Food Journal; It highlighted the existential issues and risks within the global food supply system. The COVID-19 Pandemic gave way to seeing how absolutely unprepared countries were for these kinds of global events.

Scientists who worked on the report have stated “We urge scientists, engineers, investors, and policymakers to consider future foods as a malnutrition migration pathway.” The report highlights that this new avenue for food production and nutrition is a clear alternative to common plant-based and animal-based diets that most people maintain today.

Dr. Asaf Tzachor of the Cambridge Centre for the Study of Existential Risk authored the report. While he claims evidence for the weakness of food supply he also highlights the wide-ranging risks that the environment holds under climate change assessments. The future food production methods that he suggests aim to mitigate environmental risks including floods, frosts, dry spells, and droughts. CSER continues to offer solutions in order to help the world population which is also related to their entire purpose as a group “We are dedicated to the study and mitigation of risks that could lead to human extinction or civilisational collapse.”
