For many years the Democratic Party Platform has always been a pro-union party. It may come as a surprise to some, but Republicans supported the idea of Labor Unions in Post Civil War era.

During the times of the Reconstruction era and Industrial Revolution, having a labor union made sense. At the time, the Republican Party was seen as progressive for wanting to end slavery. For the times, integrating and accepting the growing diversity in America was considered progressive.

The Democrats claim that the unions fought for the middle class.

“It was labor unions that led the fight to improve working conditions and labor standards and helped to build the largest middle class in history. Labor unions demonstrate that we are stronger together than as individuals.”

However, Labor Unions also had their fair share of racial divides. The first labor Union formed, the National Labor Union (NLU), campaigned to exclude Chinese workers. White unions refused to allow African Americans to join the ranks, which led to the creation of the Colored National Labor Union (CNLU).

The CNLU was founded by a strong supporter of the Republican Party, Isaac Myers. He would later be succeeded as the union’s president by Fredrick Douglass. However, the CNLU later failed due to becoming more political and was seen as a branch of the Republican branch.

Let that sink in; a union was seen as a branch of the Republican party. A union for minorities, no less. Today, labor unions are associated with the Democratic Party, and the Democrats make sure you don’t forget it.

“For decades, Democrats have stood alongside labor unions in defense of fair pay and economic security. Democrats understand that labor unions helped build America’s middle class, and organized labor remains critical to fulfilling America’s basic bargain: If you work hard and do your part, you should be able to get ahead and stay ahead. We need to strengthen and protect America’s workforce.”

The platform should be a little more specific. Democrats will stand alongside labor unions as long as they are not in the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

On August 11, 2022, the Biden administration ended the labor organization that represents U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement employees. The decision erases the National ICE Council and leaves its 7,600 members, mostly deportation officers, without a collective bargaining agreement or union representation.

Maga Conservatives reported:

“Chris Crane, president of the council, said the government colluded with AFGE to silence the organization. He said:

“There is no doubt that ICE and DHS leadership worked in unison with corrupt union bosses to make this happen. DHS and AFGE leadership both wanted desperately to silence ICE Council whistleblowers.

Without a union, it’s doubtful those whistleblowers will have jobs much longer. We did what we were supposed to do. We reported to the Department of Labor that union bosses at AFGE were allegedly spending dues money on prostitutes and strippers, sexually assaulting their own employees, engaging in payoffs and coverups, and other unlawful and egregious acts.”

The separation was a long time coming as President Chris Cane once told The Times that the national union was “Anti-ICE” and “Anti-law enforcement.” The employees at the agency will have to conduct a new organization or join a different union. It will be curious to see what new management in ICE could bring.
