Reality seems to sink in as Joe Biden and the White House gear up for a possible presidential transition.
Despite the elections being six months away, the Biden administration is preparing to accept the harsh reality that the chances of reelecting Joe Biden are bleak.
Director of the Office of Management and Budget, Shalanda Young, has started issuing memos to executive departments and agencies instructing them to assign a transition planning point person by May 3. This memo begins the initial procedural step in congressional-mandated readiness for presidential transitions.
Meanwhile, White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients will meet with the White House Transition Coordinating Council next week; this will be attended by senior White House policy, national security, and management officials, as mandated by the Presidential Transition Act. Zients led Biden’s 2020 transition team.
The act intends to provide federal support to ensure a smooth transition for major party candidates as they prepare to govern and guarantee they can outright implement policies upon assuming office.
Since the September 11 attack, ensuring that presidential candidates are ready to take over has been the top priority.
The act was revised and updated several times to ensure candidates have enough resources while requiring incumbent officials to gear up for the handoff and transition process.
The law also requires candidates for the presidency and the General Services Administration to create a memorandum of understanding covering everything, from the provision of federal office space to access to sensitive documents, by September 1; however, the agreement was often accomplished earlier than the scheduled deadline. Before the MOU is signed, presumed candidates must secure formal nominations from their respective parties.
Meanwhile, sources close to Trump shared that the two eldest sons of the former president are gearing up to play key roles in assembling the second Trump administration, including vetting potential officials and staffers.
One source noted that Donald Trump Jr. aims to “keep the John Boltons of the world outside a second Trump administration.”
However, in an interview with the New York Post last month, Don Jr. remarked that he is inclined to take a “very active” role in the transition team, however, he doesn’t think he will play another role than that in the White House.
“Mostly just to make sure we stop some of the D.C. swamp rats and the swamp creatures from getting in there and doing their thing,” Mr. Trump Jr. said.
