White House comes out as ‘alarmed’ over the ousting of Rep. Liz Cheney from her GOP leadership position

The White House has come out as ‘alarmed’ over the ousting of now former Republican conference leader Liz Cheney. The GOP voted last Wednesday morning to oust Liz Cheney from her leadership role in the party.

“It’s disturbing to see any leader, regardless of party, being attacked for simply speaking the truth. And as the president said last week, it is hard to understand,” said Press Secretary Jen Psaki referring to Cheney’s stance on the January 6th riot. Cheney has reignited GOP conflicts after condemning former President Donald Trump for his claims that the 2020 election was stolen. Many Democrats refer to the claim now as the “Big Lie.” Cheney wrote on Twitter soon after a recently released Trump statement, “The 2020 presidential election was not stolen. Anyone who claims it was is spreading THE BIG LIE, turning their back on the rule of law, and poisoning our democratic system.” Several days later Cheney was ousted.

President Biden has stated that he “doesn’t understand” the GOP for attacking Cheney’s challenge to the Trump accusations. Biden didn’t call out any Republican in particular in his statement. On the day of the vote to remove Cheney, Biden met with the four Republican congressional leaders including House Minority leader Kevin McCarthy. When asked by reporters prior to their meeting in the Oval Office if McCarthy could be trusted, Biden said, “Yes.”
