On Wednesday, three Republican House members wrote a letter to President Joe Biden announcing that they would be investigating the way he and his administration handled the situation in Afghanistan once the troops have been evacuated.
Devin Nunes (CA), Mike Rogers (AL), and Michael McCaul wrote a joint letter outlining their plans to investigate the Biden administration’s withdrawal from Afghanistan “vigorously”. Their letter read: “That investigation will comprise a joint, comprehensive review by our three Committees of the intelligence, diplomatic, and military factors that led to the current fiasco” (Just the News).
In addition, they wrote that it was imperative for the Department of Defense, Department of State, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the Intelligence Community to “take immediate steps to preserve all records related to your Administration’s withdrawal of U.S. personnel, including diplomatic staff, intelligence personnel, and military forces, as well as those of our allies, from Afghanistan” (Human Events).
They also wrote: “The ongoing chaos in Afghanistan profoundly concerns the American people. The horrifying scenes on the ground and the resulting erosion of America’s worldwide geostrategic position raise troubling questions about your administration’s ability to competently manage a major foreign crisis. As elected officials, our primary duty is to protect the American people.”
They continued, saying, “Thus, we were shocked to hear White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki declare that no Americans are stranded in Afghanistan. We implore you to acknowledge that, in fact, thousands of Americans remain stranded in Afghanistan, and to do all in your power to locate and evacuate these U.S. citizens. Our nation has no higher priority at this moment in history.”
On Thursday, at least 13 American troops lost their lives in an attack at the airport in Kabul. This incident has caused anger in many Americans at home who were already upset at the way things have been handled in Afghanistan.
In addition, Politico reported that ranking members of the military had given the Taliban a list of names of American citizens, green card holders, and U.S. allies who are currently in Afghanistan in hopes of the terrorist group allowing those people to evacuate. The Biden administration has already acknowledged that that may have been a mistake and been turned into a kill list by the group.
I would like to see this investigation go somewhere. But, like so many Republican investigations, it peters out. Do you remember Trey Gawdy’s Benghazi investigation, or Hillary’s security compromised server? How about Eric Holder’s fast and furious or Joe Biden using US foreign aid to Ukraine to force the termination of investigations that might expose his pot-head son? Just before elections, the Republicans ramp up rhetoric and fall asleep immediately after the elections. Geeez!!
