Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee’s Shocking Claims: “Moon is a Planet” and “Made Up of Gases”

A Democrat lawmaker from Texas recently made shocking claims during a solar eclipse activity last Monday.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee told a group of high school students in Houston that the moon is a “planet” and it consists “mostly of gases.”

She continued misinforming the students, saying, “You’ve heard the word ‘full moon.”

“Sometimes, you need to take the opportunity just to come out and see a full moon, which is that complete-rounded circle, which is made up mostly of gases. And that’s why the question is: Why or how could we as humans live on the moon? Are the gases such that we could do that?”

Jackson Lee once chaired the House Science Committee’s space subcommittee. On Monday’s solar eclipse, she let out these shocking statements to a group of students from Booker T. Washington High School.

The congresswoman further said, “The sun is a mighty powerful heat, but it’s almost impossible to go near the sun. The moon is more manageable.”

She added more questionable statements, such as the moon emitting “unique light and energy.”

Jackson Lee quipped, “You have the energy of the moon at night.”

Then she went on to explain the solar eclipse and broadcast it live on X: “What you will see today will be the closest distance that the moon has ever been in the last 20 years, which means that’s why they will shut the light down because they will be close to the Earth, which is an amazing experience.”

“Well, I know they’re some humorously saying so, but we will —we are working now in the Artemis Project, to take human beings, astronauts, to land on the moon. I don’t think we’ve been on the moon in the last 50 years. So we will be landing on the moon.”

“You will be able to tell because there will be complete darkness.

The Texas lawmaker also shared about wanting to live on the moon.

“And you will see in a moment—or not a moment—you’ll see in a couple of years that NASA is going back to the moon with human beings. Anybody heard of that?”

“Well, I know they’re some humorously saying so, but we will—we are working now in the Artemis Project, to take human beings, astronauts, to land on the moon. I don’t think we’ve been on the moon in the last 50 years. So we will be landing on the moon.”

“I don’t know about you, I want to be first in line to know how to live and to be able to survive on the moon.”

“That’s another planet that we’re going to see shortly,” Jackson Lee remarked.

On Tuesday, the lawmaker went on X, but instead of apologizing to students for the misinformation, she went on to throw tirades against the Republicans for calling her out.

“Obviously, I misspoke and meant to say the sun, but as usual, Republicans are focused on stupid things instead of stuff that really matters,” she said.

“What can I say though, foolish thinkers lust for stupidity.”

She also did not take down her solar eclipse post.
