Mike Johnson: No Unifying Moments in Biden’s SOTU, “Divisive,” “Hyper-partisan”

If his face during the State of the Union won’t say it all, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) spoke with reporters to discuss his views on President Joe Biden’s remarks.

Johnson replied, “Well, we were disappointed” when asked for his “general reaction.”

“I mean, look, usually in a State of the Union, you have at least segments of it that are bipartisan, where we can unify and agree on things. President Biden gave none of them tonight; it was a completely hyper-partisan speech. I don’t know how else to describe it. It was a campaign speech and a pretty vitriolic one at that.”

He also recognized that people were reacting to his facial expressions, and he said: “I tried to keep a poker face, but it was very difficult. I disagreed so vehemently with so much of what he said, and I think people back home did as well.”

He also defended GOP members who outrightly blasted Biden during SOTU.

Johnson said, “People got very emotional tonight because it was an overly partisan speech and it was filled, full of information that is just objectively not true. And so you saw the visceral reaction, I think, from people in the chamber and I suspect that a lot of people at home were feeling that same frustration.”

Meanwhile, during the speech, he urged the audience at the chamber to maintain decorum which he thinks is “mostly respected” and “that was a good thing for the country.”

The House Speaker also could not help but show his disagreement with the president. He was seen grimacing, shaking his head, and raising his eyebrows throughout the President’s speech.

In his interview with Fox News’s Sean Hannity, Mike Johnson quipped Biden is “desperate”

“He’s the most unpopular president who has ever run for re-election. I think it was 41 minutes into his speech before the commander-in-chief even made any reference to the border.”

The Louisiana lawmaker also blasted Joe Biden for apologizing to Laken Riley’s murderer.

As if his blunder of mispronouncing Laken’s name during SOTU is not enough, during an interview with MSNBC’s Jonathan Capehat, the President apologized for using the term “illegal” to describe the suspect.

“The president is cowering to his base and showing deference to a man who deserves none. This man is an illegal immigrant who brutally murdered Laken Riley. President Biden should be apologizing to Laken’s family. What an embarrassment,” Speaker Johnson wrote on X.

ICE confirmed that Jose Ibarra originally entered the US illegally through El Paso, Texas, in 2022.
