Texas gun laws now allow law-abiding residents to carry a gun without a license.
Earlier this summer, Governor Greg Abbott signed the constitutional carry bill amid controversy from gun control activists. House Bill 1927, effective as of September 1st, eliminates the requirement to have a license to carry a handgun, although the legislation does not prevent businesses from banning or prohibiting firearms on their property.
Federal background checks would also remain in place for certain gun purchases, yet Texas currently has no state requirements when it comes to background checks on private gun sales. The bill also contains stricter penalties for felons caught illegally carrying firearms.
As a Republican governor, Abbott has passed numerous bills and lifted regulations that seek to manage Americans. For instance, Texas was one of the first states to fully reopen, lift mask mandates, and implement lax gun laws.
In a press release, the governor celebrated the conclusion of the state’s legislative session. Abbott said, “The 87th Legislative Session was a monumental success, and many of the laws going into effect today will ensure a safer, freer, healthier, and more prosperous Texas. I look forward to my continued work with the legislature to build upon these successes and create an even brighter future for the Lone Star State.”
