Social media giants and activists are again in an uproar after a police officer shot a sixteen year old black girl, Ma’Khia Bryant, during an attempted stabbing.

The shooting took place in Columbus, Ohio, after the police were called to the scene about an attempted stabbing. At 4:32 pm police received a call that “females were there trying to stab them and put their hands on them.” Bryant’s family said it was Ma’Khia who called the police “because girls were fighting outside her house.” Body cam footage shows officers arriving at 4.44 pm and approaching the group on the driveway of their home. As the officer approached he asked “Hey, what’s going on?” Ma’Khia can then be seen tackling another female to the ground with a knife in her hand. The officer can be heard shouting “Get down!” four times as he pulls his gun. Bryant is still seen chasing the other girl with a knife in her hand.

As Ma’Khia raised her arms, swinging the knife at the girl who was on the hood of a car, the officer fired four shots, striking Ma’Khia, who fell to the ground. The teenager could be seen bleeding as another officer prepared to administer CPR, saying “stay with us Ma’Khia.” “She had a knife,” the officer says in the video. The knife can be seen on the ground next to her leg immediately after she was shot. One of the officers can later be seen taking witnesses to police vehicles while he tapes off the crime scene. “She came after me with a knife so he got her,” a witness wearing pink can be heard telling the cop. Ma’Khia was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 5:21 pm [MSN].

This incident has since been a largely debatable issue. Racial justice activists have criticized the officer, insisting that he should have used a taser or other methods. However conservative-leaning icons have praised the officer, saying that his actions saved the life of the other girl involved. Police Chief Michael Woods said, “We know, based on this footage, the officer took action to protect another young girl in our community.” Woods also said the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting, and when the agency has finished their investigation, “the divisional police will conduct an administrative review of the actions of this officer and all officers at the scene” [CBS].
