Five Rockets from Iraqi Militants Struck US Military Base in Syria

At least one rocket landed at the US-led military coalition base in Syria after Iraqi militants fired five rockets from Zummar, a town on the border of Syria and Iraq.

Two Iraqi security sources and a US official confirmed the attack.

The assault comes after Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani returned from a meeting with President Joe Biden at the White House and failed to secure an agreement.

Kataib Hezbollah, a militant group in Iraq, claimed the attacks and declared that it would resume offensives after a temporary ceasefire, seeing that there were no intentions from the US forces to withdraw from the country.

“What happened a short while ago is the beginning,” the group said.

According to the US official, who refused to be named, there were more than five rockets launched from Iraq toward the coalition base in Rumalyn, Syria, but emphasized that there was no casualty from the attack.

The official further said that an aircraft carried out a strike against the launcher.

Two security sources and a senior army officer in Iraq reported that they found a rocket launcher installed on a small truck in Zummar.

The attack on the US military base occurred just a day after a military base in Iraq was rocked by an explosion, killing one member of an Iraqi security force.

A leader of an Iraqi militia, Sheikh Mohammed al-Tamimi, secretary-general of Faylaq al-Waad al-Sadiq, issued a warning that US forces would return home “in coffins” if they insisted on staying in the country.

Al-Waad al-Sadiq, a member of an Islamic Resistance of Iraq coalition of militias, has launched attacks on US troops since October in support of Hamas, the same group that launched a drone strike on January 28, which resulted in the deaths of three US military troopers.

The drone strike initiated formal talks between the US and Iraqi governments to discuss the possible removal of American troops from the country. However, there has been no progress, and the withdrawal did not materialize.

al-Tamimi then warned “the reckless, senile” Biden. He said, “If the agreement is not achieved, we will expel the Americans in their coffins from Iraq, and we will humiliate the ‘Black House’ administration.”

“And they will see who the resistance is and what the capabilities of the resistance are, especially now that we have drones and long-range smart missiles.”

The escalation of war in the Middle East comes amid Biden’s tenuous reelection bid.

Meanwhile, there is a deafening silence from the White House regarding the recent missile attacks launched against a US military base in Iraq.
