It was reported earlier today that Texas Republican Rep. Chip Roy is sounding the alarm on just how bad the immigration crisis has gotten at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Roy is calling for President Joe Biden and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to be impeached.
In a letter, Roy accused Mayorkas of “impeachable conduct” regarding his handling of illegal immigration.
Roy addressed reports that the administration is set to rescind Title 42, the statute used by the Trump administration to quickly deport illegal aliens during the COVID-19 pandemic as potential threats to the country.
The Texas Republican told the DHS boss that if he allows the statute to expire, his actions would “be unconscionable and, without question, an impeachable offense in its own right.”
“Your job as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security — carried out under your oath to defend the Constitution — is to secure the United States of America.
Yet, you have purposefully failed to do so, and in the process, you have empowered criminal drug cartels, impaired the health of Americans, damaged America’s economic health, allowed illegal migrants to destroy private property, and placed American citizens at imminent risk of physical harm,” Roy wrote.
“These actions represent acts of impeachable conduct as Secretary — which we have documented in part — and represent a call to action for Congress to hold you to account.”
Roy added that “even if Congress were to set aside all these previous actions representing a breach of your duty and were to focus solely on the imminent decision you are purportedly planning to take — halting, particularly at this moment, the enforcement of 42 U.S. Code § 265 (Title 42) authority at the U.S. southern border — we would still be duty-bound to impeach you.”
“In fact, since you became Secretary, your Department has used Title 42 as the basis for almost ALL of those refused entry,” Roy added.
“Though prior to your assumption of the post of DHS Secretary more than 80% were turned away and now only 50% – at least there was some brake.”
Last month, Roy went scorched earth on the House floor over the omnibus government spending bill recently agreed upon by Congress.
Roy slammed members of both parties for cheering on an appropriations bill that does not solve the problems of ordinary Americans — particularly the border crisis and soaring oil prices.
“Here we are again,” Roy began.
“We’re sitting here, at the precipice of government funding running out, and I hear all my colleagues talking about how great it is that we’re going to come up with some great big omnibus bill, and I’m hearing that from my colleagues on both sides of the aisle. Nobody in America wants us to plus up more spending, irresponsibly.”
“Nobody in America wants us to say, ‘Oh, let’s pat ourselves on the back now’ because some of my colleagues on the other side of the aisle are saying ‘well, you know what, it’s time now to ban Russian oil.’ It’s not good enough to ban Russian oil if we’re not going to open up American oil and gas,” he said.
