Bill Barr Walks Back on Trump, Vows Support for Republican Ticket

Former Attorney General Bill Barr, a frequent critic of President Donald Trump, walks back and declares his support for the Republican presumptive nominee in an interview with Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom.”

“The real threat to liberty, the real threat to our system, are the excesses of the progressive left. They are perverting the system of justice, and that’s where the danger lies—the corruption and subversion of our institutions by the left,” quipped Barr.

Bill Hemmer, co-host of the show, then asked: “I heard you call this hush money case outrageous. I also know you’ve been asked many times and had disagreements with the former president. He is the presumptive nominee, and we assume he will be the nominee. Will you support him in 2024?”

“I’ve said all along that given two bad choices, I think it’s my duty to pick the person I think would do the least harm to the country, and in my mind that’s—I will vote for the Republican ticket. I will support the Republican ticket,” Barr responded.

He further described Biden’s presidency as “national suicide.”

“I think the real danger to the country, the real danger to democracy, as I say, is the progressive agenda, and I’ve said Trump may be playing Russian roulette, but a continuation of the Biden administration is national suicide in my opinion.”

The former attorney general also expressed outrage over Trump’s ongoing bogus criminal trial.

He remarked, “This case is an abomination.”

“It’s obviously political. Seven years after he pays hush money to try to come up with this case. It’s also, as you say, it’s not only far-fetched; they’re trying to predicate it on a federal crime which wasn’t prosecuted.”

“And they’re wrong about it. This was not a campaign contribution. They’re just wrong on the law,” Barr added.

On Tuesday, after the trial concluded for the day, the Republican presumptive nominee addressed the media and supporters, calling the prosecution against him as “rigged” and “coming out of the White House.”

“It makes me campaign locally, and that’s okay,” Trump said. “We’re doing better now than we’ve ever done, so I think it’s having a reverse effect.”

Barr’s remarks were a reversal of his previous criticisms of Trump and refusal to back him during the GOP presidential primary when he was among former Trump aides who claimed that they’d prefer not to see him on the ballot in November.

The former attorney general was a longtime Republican; he served on Trump’s cabinet from 2019 to 2020. However, by December 2020, he had stepped down after countering Trump’s remarks related to election fraud.
