Upon a coronavirus vaccine mandate, 153 Houston Methodist health system employees have resigned or been fired after refusing to be vaccinated.
The system is one of the first to impose a mandate for employees, despite widespread opposition. Defending their decision, a spokesperson said, “Patients are always first, and that’s what it’s always been.” Nearly 25,000 employees of the healthcare system agreed to comply with the mandate in a timely manner, and employers then suspended those who did not get vaccinated.

Out of 178 initial employees, 25 were inoculated after being suspended, and the others did not. Jennifer Bridges, a former nurse at Methodist, was the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit against her employer. However, US District Judge Lynn Hughes ruled against her, stating, “This is not coercion. Methodist is trying to do their business of saving lives without giving them the COVID-19 virus. It is a choice made to keep staff, patients, and their families safer.”
Since the FDA’s emergency clearance of COVID-19 vaccines, organizations such as the Informed Consent Action Network have taken efforts to protect the medical freedom of workers.
