After blue-checkmark-celebrities threw a hissy fit over the prospect of paying monthly for a Twitter subscription that includes verification, the new owner of Twitter responded.
Elon Musk shared his thoughts on the blue check marks which he seems to think of as a class system.
“Twitter’s current lords & peasants system for who has or doesn’t have a blue checkmark is bullshit. Power to the people! Blue for $8/month.”
Twitter currently has an optional monthly subscription service called Twitter Blue. It’s $4.99 a month and it unlocks additional features on the platform.
The intent is to change it to a more expensive plan that also verifies users, according to The Verge.
They are reporting that “Twitter is currently planning to charge $19.99 for the new Twitter Blue subscription. Under the current plan, verified users would have 90 days to subscribe or lose their blue checkmark.”
The article also added that employees working on the project have been notified that the deadline to launch the new feature is November 7. Employees must meet the deadline or face firing.
One of the world’s wealthiest authors doesn’t like Musk’s new plan. Stephen King tweeted, “$20 a month to keep my blue check? F*ck that, they should pay me. If that gets instituted, I’m gone like Enron.”
In response to a comment on his tweet King said it’s not a money thing. It’s the principle.
Musk responded to King by tweeting, “We need to pay the bills somehow! Twitter cannot entirely rely on advertisers. How about $8?”
Musk went on to say, “I will explain the rational in longer form before this is implemented. It is the only way to defeat bots & trolls.”
We all know that there has been a lot of talk about how many Twitter accounts are bots and trolls. Musk is on a mission to rid the platform of these types of accounts.
Another blue-check-celebrity, Kathy Griffin added her two cents about the changes coming.
She said, “I don’t think it’s that blue check people are too cheap to pay 20 bucks a month, I just don’t wanna give any money to Elon musk and the Saudi family.”
Then she went into her “I’m moving to Canada if Trump wins” speech, saying, “I’ll stay until the midterms. In the meantime, I’m signing up for all other sites until we can settle on one. Look, I like you guys and all, but not $20.00 a month like. Inflation!”
Who knew that record-high inflation is even affecting celebrities?
There have been a plethora of celebrities and public figures threatening to leave Twitter ever since the possible Musk takeover was announced in April.
The threats really kicked in when the deal was completed last week.
Apparently allowing people their First Amendment rights offends them. What has them so afraid? Is it frightening to think about people learning the truth on matters that have been off-limits over the past few years?
