Threat to Free Expression in Hong Kong

In Hong Kong, a new national security law was passed on June 30 which instantly criminalized words and images that just the day previous were protected as free speech. Residents wanted to push the boundaries of the new law and see how far they could go, many walked with the streets with signs saying things like “Liberate Hong Kong” or “Revolution of our times”. Since the passing of the law, 20 people have been arrested and punishments for violating that law could include a sentencing of life in prison. What is and isn’t allowed by this new law is oddly vague which means anyone is at risk for what they may say, write, create, or even tweet.
