Multiple police officers who responded to the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas were struck with gunfire by a suspect who “just began shooting anyone that was in his way,” a law enforcement officer revealed Wednesday.

Texas Department of Public Safety Lt. Chris Olivarez, speaking on NBC’s “Today” show, said the events that led to the deaths of 19 students and two teachers began when Salvador Ramos shot his grandmother and then crashed a vehicle while fleeing that scene. Local police then got calls about an individual armed with a weapon making his way into the school, according to Olivarez.

He said when law enforcement “tried to make entry into the building, they were met with gunfire by the suspect, by the shooter.”

Ramos came to the school with an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle (ArmaLite Rifle, not assault rifle) and body armor.

According to a brief from Texas Senator John Whitmire, Ramos legally purchased two AR-15s on May 17th and May 22nd, 2022, just after his 18th birthday. He posted pictures of them on his Instagram, which have since been removed.

Olivarez said, “We do know for a fact that there was no criminal history or no gang affiliation as well that would have set off any indicators from him to make this purchase [of a long rifle].” They are unsure of a motive as of yet and still have “a lot of unanswered questions.”

Ramos also sent messages to an unnamed woman on Instagram. She claims that she did not know him personally and wrote to her followers:

“I DONT KNOW HIM AND I DONT EVEN LIVE IN TEXAS… he’s a stranger i know nothing about him he decided to tag me in his gun post. I’m so sorry for the victims and their families i really don’t know what to say.”
