Report sees ID, AZ, and SC as top relocation destinations in US—IL, NY and CA see most residents leave

North American Moving Services published the 2020 migration report outlining the top states Americans are leaving and where they are relocating.
Illinois, New York, and California were the top three states with the most outbound residents. These states have experienced an increase in crime over the past year. California and New York are also among the states with the highest cost of living in the country. Idaho, Arizona, and South Carolina were the top three inbound states, with Florida at sixth place and Texas at seventh.

Texas, Florida, and Tennessee do not have a state income tax. Although Arizona and South Carolina do, their rates are significantly lower than in states like California and New York. According to the North American Moving Services, the COVID-19 pandemic did not compromise American’s moving plans and may have been a motivation.
The report suggests that an escape from crowded cities may have fueled relocations. “For those seeking to avoid congested areas, the south offers a lot of open space and opportunity to live more rurally, but with access to common conveniences. This may have been particularly important in 2020 as individuals sought their own “space” and avoid congested cities.”
