Recent poll finds QAnon is as popular as some major religions in United States

The Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) and the Interfaith Youth Core conducted a poll finding that QAnon is as popular as some major religions in .

QAnon emerged in 2017 and gained exponential support throughout the last four years. The group has been coined as being ‘far-right’ conspiracy theorists. Opponents claim former President Donald Trump, his followers, and far-right news outlets should be blamed for Americans’ belief in QAnon.

Three main statements were presented in the poll. PRRI reports that 15 percent of Americans surveyed agree with the statement, “the government, media, and financial worlds in the U.S. are controlled by a group of Satan-worshipping pedophiles who run a global child sex trafficking operation.” This notion is one of QAnon’s core and most popular beliefs. 20 percent agree with the statement, “There is a storm coming soon that will sweep away the elites in power and restore the rightful leaders.” Lastly, 15 percent agree with the statement, “American patriots may have to resort to violence” to depose the pedophiles and restore the country’s rightful order.”

Media consumption has been connected to support of QAnon, with nearly four in ten Americans who trust “far-right news outlets such as OANN [One American News Network] and Newsmax (40%)” agreeing with QAnon statements. The poll also found a distinction between political parties and support of QAnon, “Republicans (23%) are significantly more likely than independents (14%) and Democrats (8%) to agree that the government, media, and financial worlds in the U.S. are controlled by a group of Satan-worshipping pedophiles who run a global child sex trafficking operation.”

Out of all Republicans surveyed, 23 percent believe in QAnon, while 21 percent reject the group, and 55 percent are doubters. The groups were decided as such, “1. QAnon believers: Respondents who completely or mostly agreed with these statements (14%); 2. QAnon doubters: Respondents who mostly disagreed with these statements (46%); and 3. QAnon rejecters: Respondents who completely disagreed with all three statements (40%).” Despite not being a majority belief among Republicans, QAnon has been consistently linked to the party, primarily in relation to politicians expressing support of the group and suspicions regarding January 6.
