A coalition of over 60 pro-life leaders is urging Senators to reject Joe Biden’s nominee for secretary of the Department of Human Health and Services (HHS), Xavier Becerra, who they have called ‘an enemy to every pro-life policy and law’. Becerra is currently the Attorney General of California, and is very progressive.
In a letter sent out to the ranking members of the Senate committees in charge of health and finance, the group expressed concern at Becerra’s record regarding abortion, warning that his nomination being confirmed would be ‘divisive and a step in the wrong direction’. The letter was signed by leaders of some of the most well-known pro-life groups and organisation, including March for Life, Students for Life, Live Action, and Americans United for Life.

The letter said that:
“We understand that the president needs to assemble a cabinet; however, Mr. Becerra has proven himself to be an enemy of the health of women and the unborn. He cannot be entrusted with our national health programs and policies and is not qualified to serve as Secretary of Health and Human Services.”
The group also came up with a list of ways that Becerra attacked pro-life Americans, which included forcing groups to violate their religious liberty protections, targeting pro-life journalists and pro-life pregnancy centres, exploiting the coronavirus pandemic to expand abortion, and his pro-choice voting record when he was a member of Congress.
Marjorie Dannenfelser, the head of the Susan B. Anthony List, gave a statement about Becerra. It said, ‘Xavier Becerra has been portrayed as moderate, but he is infamous among pro-lifers for his decades-long record as a vocal pro-abortion advocate. In Congress and as attorney general of California, Becerra not only joined pro-abortion efforts – he led them. President Biden could not have picked a more eager pro-abortion activist to head HHS and we urge senators to reject his nomination’.
To many, Joe Biden’s nomination of Becerra seems strange; Joe Biden is America’s second ever Catholic President. The Catholic Church vehemently opposes abortion, with Pope John Paul II writing that laws which allow abortion are ‘in complete opposition to the inviolable right to life proper to every individual’. Yet despite the Catholic Church’s teachings on abortion being clear and simple, Biden has either not bothered to properly learn them, has completely disregarded them, or has forgotten them.
Should Becerra be confirmed, it could further antagonise and isolate Trump supporters, despite Biden promising unity. The move is likely to anger religious communities the most (and many religious people supported Trump) but is likely to please leftists and liberals. It will almost certainly further divide an already divided society, and further alienate groups of voters who already feel alienated by the current president.
Becerra’s confirmation hearings begin on Tuesday.
