Pelosi says house will move forward with January 6 investigations after last month’s Republican filibuster

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the house will move forward with an investigation into the January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol.

Last month, House Republicans filibustered an independent commission to investigate the incident. “The bill was proposed by the House of Representatives ‘to approve legislation to establish a bipartisan commission’ on the Capitol incident. The bill passed by a vote of 252 to 175, with all Congressional Democrats and thirty-five Republicans voting in favor of it (CBS News). In the 54-35 vote to filibuster the proposal, six Republicans joined Democrats, which fell six votes short of the sixty needed to start debate on establishing a commission.”

Pelosi told reporters that she was “disappointed” that a bipartisan commission could not be formed. “Whether we have a commission today, tomorrow, the next day out of the Senate or not, the work of the committees will be very important in seeking what we are — getting the American people the truth,” Pelosi said. It is unclear as to how the commission will be formed and whether or not Pelosi will select members.

Numerous lawmakers and politicians, including former Vice President Mike Pence, support an investigation into January 6. In a speech to a Republican group in New Hampshire, Pence called Jan. 6 “a dark day in the history of the United States Capitol, but thanks to the swift action of the Capitol Police and federal law enforcement, violence was quelled, the Capitol was secured and that same day, we reconvened the Congress and did our duty under the Constitution and the laws of the United States.”
