Nancy Pelosi Denies $1.8 Trillion White House Covid Deal and Receives Backlash from Democrats

Almost immediately after the deal was proposed, Speaker Pelosi denied the White House Covid deal for $1.8 Trillion. Now several democrats are angry with her for shooting it down saying that she should have taken it. This deal is supposed to deliver another round of stimulus for $1200 to taxpayers, gives a small reprieve of student loan payments, and extends the supplemental federal unemployment benefit; but that benefit has been lowered from $600 weekly to $400. It even provides a help to citeies and states dealing with economic downturn because of the lockdowns.

Dan Pfeiffer from the Obama administration tweeted, “While there are potential risks, Democrats should aggressively pursure a COVID Relief deal with Trump. It’s the right thing to do, but the politics can also work in our favor.” He continued in another tweet, “Taking a politically risky position to help people in desperate need of help is what separates Democrats and Republicans. This may be the last chance to help struggling families until January at the very earliest. If Dems can get a good deal, they should:”

Ro Khanna is a California Democrat like Nancy Pelosi, but he argued that this was an even better stimulus deal than the one from Obama. He stressed that struggling Americans cannot wait until February for help, hinting to after the inauguration when Joe Biden would take over as President if he were to be elected.

Pelosi said, “This proposal amounted to one step forward, two steps back.” It’s possible that one reason she denied the relief money was because there wasn’t a provision for the postal service which democrats have been demanding for sometime. She also said that she didn’t like how there wasn’t anything in the bill to “crush the virus” despite organizations, like the CDC, is focusing on those efforts.

She also said, “When the President talks about wanting a bigger relief package, his proposal appears to mean that he wants more money at his discretion to grant or withhold, rather than agreeing on language prescribing how we honor our workers, crush the virus and put money in the pockets of workers.”

Even former presidential candidate Andrew Yang took a swing at Pelosi for denying this relief for Americans. He said, “Nancy Pelosi take this deal! Put politics aside people are hurting.”
