Mexico fans throw bottles at U.S. Soccer players in Nations League Final win

On Sunday, the CONCACAF Nations League finals turned violent when Mexico fans threw bottles at the U.S. national soccer team members after their win against Mexico.

Footage showed fans throwing objects at U.S. team members while they celebrated their victory at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver, Colorado. Mexico’s winning streak in the last three meetings was broken by the U.S. after Christian Pulisic made a penalty kick, giving the U.S. a 3-2 lead. Earlier, the game was paused because of derogatory chants from fans, labeled to be anti-gay, which broke CONCACAF’s anti-discrimination rules [Newsweek].

At the end of the match, Giovanni Reyna was hit by an object and required medical assistance from the staff. He later revisited the field and his team for celebrations. The fans received criticism for their actions. “It has no place in the game, spectators throwing objects onto the field,” U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter said. “Total lack of respect for what’s happening on the field and all effort that both teams are putting into the game.” He proceeded to explain Reyna was in O.K. condition, but that he could have had worse injuries.

Sports commentator Maximiliano Bretos also commented on the issue, tweeting, “I am right in the corner of where USMNT celebrated, disgusting what just happened. Some people should spend night in jail tonight, or longer. Gio Reyna got smashed in the temple with a full Coca Cola.” [Republic World]
