Massive News For Election Integrity As Arizona’s Attorney General Announces Two More Suspects Indicted For Ballot Harvesting

Guillermina Fuentes was a former mayor of San Luis. She was accused of ballot harvesting in the 2020 primary election. According to the prosecutors, Fuentes was a well-known Democratic operative in San Luis. She used her status to gather ballots and sometimes fill out ballots for voters.

A quick definition of ballot harvesting is when political operatives collect absentee ballots and then drops them off at a polling place. At first, it sounds harmless; political operatives collect from drop-off boxes, a voter’s home, or any other location. Many would say absentee ballots should be counted too, and we don’t dispute that.

However, the drop-off boxes have been abused due to the lockdowns. Political operatives like Fuentes wasn’t acting as a delivery person; she filled out multiple ballots herself.

AZ Central reported:

Investigators wrote that it appeared Fuentes used her position as a powerful figure in the heavily Mexican-American community to get people to give her or others their ballots to return to the polls. Fuentes and her co-defendant were seen with several mail-in envelopes outside a cultural center in San Luis on the day of the 2020 primary election, the reports show. The ballots were taken inside and dropped in a ballot box.

She was videotaped by a write-in candidate who called the Yuma County sheriff. The reports said the video showed her marking at least one ballot, but that charge was among those dropped.

An investigation was launched that day, and about 50 ballots checked for fingerprints, which were inconclusive. The investigation was taken over by the attorney general’s office within days, with investigators collaborating with sheriff’s deputies to interview voters, Fuentes and others.

Fuentes pleaded guilty in June to felony ballot abuse and was sentenced to a 30-day jail sentence. She will be on supervised probation for 24 months.

AZ Central reported that the AG office launched an investigation, interviewing many people. It tried to downplay the actions of the former Mayor and said that no one else was involved. The AG office, however, stated it was still active in the community. Their continued investigation has led to two more arrests.

The AG announced that Gloria Lopez Torres of San Luis, and Nadia Guadalupe Lizarraga-Mayorquin of San Luis, also known as Nadia Buchanan, have been charged by the State Grand Jury with Conspiracy and Ballot Abuse arising from an alleged “ballot harvesting” scheme where early ballots from other voters were collected and deposited into a ballot box on primary Election Day, August 4, 2020. The City of San Luis held municipal elections on that date.

The Grand Jury indictments were returned on October 3, 2022. They allege that Torres collected seven ballots from Lizarraga-Mayorquin, and that Lizarraga-Mayorquin collected at least one ballot from a third party.

Videos show the women delivering multiple mail-in ballots to the cultural center in San Luis. Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich has a very workload ahead of him.
