Microsoft is handing out bonus pay to employees across the globe as a reward for pushing through a tough pandemic year, The Verge reported on Thursday.

The $1,500 bonuses have the sole purpose of recognizing the “unique and challenging fiscal year that Microsoft just completed,” according to an internal memo from Microsoft chief people officer Kathleen Hogan that was viewed by the outlet (Business Insider). Microsoft has over 150,000 employees. The Verge said that all workers below the level of corporate vice president are eligible for this bonus, with Microsoft subsidiaries being excluded.

A spokesperson for Microsoft announced, “As a symbol of our appreciation for coming together as One Microsoft during a uniquely challenging year, we are proud to recognize our employees with a one-time monetary gift.” Overall, the company is paying about $200 million to eligible employees, and is not the only company to take this approach.  Walmart, Facebook, and other tech companies have followed suit.

Hogan announced the bonuses in a message to employees on Thursday. However, the bonuses will not go out until late July or August. Bonuses are only one-way companies are showing appreciation to employees during the pandemic. Some have gifted credits for food-delivery apps to help pay for meals. Others have distributed care packages or allowed for extra time off (CNBC).
