Whether you follow NFL football or not, you’ll love the story of once-third-string quarterback and last draft pick (262 overall) for the San Francisco 49ers, Brock Purdy.

Purdy played four seasons at Iowa State and is a rookie quarterback this season in the NFL. He took over the starting position for the 49ers after veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a season-ending foot injury in early December.

The quarterback that no one wanted has the opportunity to make history! One more win and he’ll be the first rookie QB to lead his team to the Super Bowl.

Where does the credit lie? In his faith in God and he is not afraid to share.

In speaking with reporters last week, Purdy said, “It’s been football, man. I don’t try to make it more than it is. I’m a faith-based guy, so that’s how I stay grounded. I don’t look at football like it’s literally everything. It’s not do or die or anything like that.”

He continued with an attitude you might not even get from fans of the sport. He said, “It’s a game and it’s my job, for sure, and I take it very seriously, but at the end of the day, I know that I’m not defined by the wins or losses as a person, like, that’s not who I am. I’m not just a quarterback. I wasn’t born to just to be a quarterback and play football, and that’s it.”

His beliefs help the rookie QB stay grounded. He told reporters, “Like, I have a life and everything like that. And I remember that, but at the same time, man, I’m a competitor.

“I love to compete. I want to win at all costs and so, I’ve been enjoying that as well, so that’s where I’m at. That’s how I stay grounded with it all, but I’m definitely thankful and blessed to be here.

“You go out there, you prepare as best you can, you get better every single day at practice, and once you get your opportunity, it’s ‘What are you going to do with it?’

“For me, I believe in the Lord, and I trust in Him. I just go out there, and I just play.

“It was just a great reminder of where my identity is, where it lies.

“And it’s in Jesus. And I continue to lean on him.”

What an amazing young man! He has an opportunity to show the world how faith in God can carry someone to new heights.

Rev. Franklin Graham, CEO of Samaritan’s Purse, and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association shared his enthusiasm for the young player.

In a statement, Graham said, “They’re now just one game away from the Super Bowl! In addition to being a super talented football player, I love the fact that Brock Purdy is so open about his faith in Jesus Christ.”

On his Twitter account, Graham congratulated Purdy and the 49ers for their win against the Dallas Cowboys and shared Purdy’s words about his faith when he spoke to the media.

Graham said he hasn’t rooted for the 49ers since the Joe Montana days, “but I’m sure pulling for them now!”
