House Democrats, Cheney CHEER ON clearly partisan January 6th select committee

The House voted 222-190 to create a select committee to investigate the January 6 riot at the US Capitol.

Previously, Republican lawmakers blocked efforts to create a bipartisan committee. Since the committee was empaneled in the House, it does not need approval from the Senate. Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, will proceed by appointing a chairman, 8 members of Congress and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy will select 5 more. Pelosi has already appointed Republican lawmaker Liz Cheney to the committee.

Cheney and Adam Kinzinger were the only two Republicans to support the creation of a select committee. Pelosi and other lawmakers believe the events of January 6 were a threat to American democracy. “It’s clear that Jan. 6 was not simply an attack on the Capitol building, it was an attack on our democracy. Every member here knows that Jan. 6 was an attempt to subvert our democracy.”
