HILARIOUS: Rep. Cori Bush—an elected black congresswoman—says ‘Black people still aren’t free’

Democrat Representative Cori Bush recently slammed the celebration of Independence Day and American freedom.

In a tweet, the lawmaker said, “When they say that the 4th of July is about American freedom, remember this: the freedom they’re referring to is for White people. This land is stolen land and Black people still aren’t free.” Congressional candidate Shahid Bittar supported Bush, replying with, “Speak it, @CoriBush! It’s almost as if our entire country has been brainwashed to ignore our history—and how its worst elements continue today—despite our self-congratulatory rhetoric.”

This year, opposition to the Fourth of July has spread like wildfire in light of Juneteenth becoming a Federal Holiday. During its annual Fourth of July coverage, PBS featured Vanessa Williams performing the Black National Anthem, the singer noted, “It’s in celebration of the wonderful opportunity that we now have to celebrate Juneteenth. So we are reflective of the times.” Other outlets have made similar efforts.

The New York Times published an opinion piece suggesting that the American flag is a partisan symbol. The article reads, “Today, flying the American flag from the back of a pickup truck or over a lawn is increasingly seen as a clue, albeit an imperfect one, to a person’s political affiliation in a deeply divided nation.” NPR suggested the Constitution is “a document with flaws and deeply ingrained hypocrisies …  that says ‘that all men are created equal’ — but women, enslaved people, Indigenous people and many others were not held as equal at the time.”
