Global panel says COVID-19 could have been prevented had the World Health Organization acted sooner

Recently, an independent international panel claimed that the Coronavirus pandemic could have been prevented had the international community not “heeded” the warning signs.

The Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response stated that compilation of “bad decisions meant Covid-19 went on to kill at least 3.3 million people so far and devastate the global economy.” They expanded upon this claim with an accusation that institutions had “failed to protect people” and that “science-denying leaders eroded public trust in health interventions.” The panel largely criticized the response of the World Health Organization, claiming that their delayed response– 8 days after the virus hit– is what allowed the virus to become a global pandemic.

Lastly, the panel insisted that the lack of international hegemony is what has held the nations of the world back from ending the virus. The panel expanded upon this point, saying that “rich, well-vaccinated countries should provide the 92 poorest territories in the Covax scheme with at least one billion vaccine doses by September 1, and more than two billion by mid-2022.”
