It’s difficult to watch anything on TV or at the movies these days without having some woke ideology shoved down your throat.
Many Americans have checked out of mainstream entertainment opting for paid subscriptions to companies that align with their values.
Some television watchers have discovered that not all shows have gone woke, however.
Paramount’s hit show Yellowstone has been very successful without bowing to the woke mob.
The show premiered its fifth season this week with another record-breaker in the ratings. 12.1 million live and same-day viewers tuned in to watch the 5th season’s debut.
The western starring Kevin Costner is the top scripted series premiere of the year. The Dutton family is more popular than ever!
“After four seasons, the show’s massive audience base continues to impress with its latest season premiere becoming the most watched scripted television premiere of 2022,” said Ashwin Navin, co-founder and CEO of Samba TV.
The show fills a niche that has been largely ignored since Bonanza left the airwaves in 1973.
“Yellowstone continues to tap into the passions of a broad swath of viewers throughout the American Midwest hungry for Western-themed genres that have been largely underrepresented on television in recent years,” Navin continued.
Not surprisingly, the show gets the biggest portion of its audience from the heart of America.
“Viewership significantly over-indexed for the season premiere within cities such as St. Louis, Cleveland and Pittsburgh and not surprisingly under-indexed in the largely coastal urban centers of San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York,” he reported.
The show is very popular among younger viewers who don’t typically watch as much TV as the older generations did. Yellowstone has managed to impress that demographic.
“The series was also up double digits in all demos, including growing 52 percent among adults 18-34 and delivering a cumulative 5.6 rating among adults 18-49.
“The breakdown goes like this: Yellowstone wrestled up 8.8 million viewers in its first airing on the Paramount Network (up 10 percent from season four).
“That number grew to 10.3 million viewers when adding in simulcast airings on CMT, TV Land and Pop. Then the figure climbed to 12.1 million when adding in encore telecasts.”
These numbers come from the totals from Paramount, CMT, Pop, and TV Land. The rebroadcast of the season 5 premiere was on four networks twice on Sunday giving everyone a chance to see it the day it came out.
Some critics have labeled the show ‘anti-woke’ which is okay with viewers looking for a break from it.
Yellowstone was nominated by the Screen Actors Guild for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. No Emmy recognition so far with some speculating it’s because the show is perceived to be ‘conservative.’
The only recognition that matters comes from the fans. If people continue to watch, the show will remain a success.
Wes Bentley, who plays Jamie Dutton, summed it up perfectly. He said, “I know we are a success because the people are watching it.”
