George Washington University Offers Mental Health Services to Cope with Election Results; Says to Prepare for ‘Emotional Aftershocks’

George Washington University sent an email to students encouraging them to seek therapy following the election as well as to prepare for November 3 as you would for a hurricane or snowstorm, warning them they should stock up on food and supplies in the event they are unable to leave their homes for a few days. The email said that counseling and psychological services will be available to students over the coming weeks to help them through their emotions surrounding the 2020 election.

The email said, “You or your friends may experience a number of reactions following the election. Having a reaction is both normal and expected. Sometimes emotional aftershocks or stress reactions appear immediately and some appear in a few hours or several days/weeks after.”

The school has also decided to offer “academic assistance” to students who may be facing challenges with their school work “related to election related activity.” The university said students should have at least one week’s worth of food and supplies in their rooms. “We suggest preparing for the Election Day period as you would for a hurricane or a snowstorm that would prevent you from going outside for several days to grab food or order takeout.”

Further, the email warned students have extra caution with their surroundings starting on Tuesday. They encouraged students to dress for the weather, wear comfortable shoes, and stay with a group for those who want to protest the results of the election.

According to USA Today/Suffolk University poll, 3 out of 4 Americans believe civil unrest will follow the election on Tuesday. 1 in 4 say they are “very confident” to see a peaceful transfer of power.
