The COVID-19 virus-related nursing homes deaths in the state are the subject of another lawsuit against the former Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo.

The plaintiff claims that Cuomo’s arrogance and “unmitigated greed” had led to unnecessary deaths.

According to the New York Post report:

“The lawsuit alleges that Cuomo and other top officials had exhibited “deliberate indifference” toward nursing home residents and caused 15,000 avoidable COVID-19 deaths.”

Sean Newman filed the case in Brooklyn’s federal district court. Newman is the husband of Janice Dean, a senior meteorologist for Fox News Channel.

In early 2020, Newman lost both of his parents at nursing facilities in the state due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Cuomo was in the middle of a scandal involving the state’s handling of nursing homes.

The controversy centered on a state mandate that demanded nursing homes accept COVID-19-treated patients.

Later, the policy was overruled, but the issue resurfaced in 2021 when Attorney General Letitia James asserted that the death rate had been undercounted by up to 50 percent.

Later on, Cuomo resigned due to unrelated allegations of sexual misconduct.

The new lawsuit claims:

“It was not only Governor Cuomo’s pride that was leading to thousands of needless deaths, but his unmitigated greed as well.”

According to the Post, Newman asserts that Cuomo “tailored his policies and actions to generate material” for a $5 million book contract.

The book, titled “American Crisis,” would focus on “leadership lessons” from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many media outlets were comparing Cuomo’s leadership during the pandemic to that of then-President Donald Trump.

It is the second suit of this type filed against Cuomo over the state’s nursing home policy.

Cuomo spokesperson Rich Azzopardi called the lawsuit “meritless.”

He stated:

“It’s unfortunate that people’s pain continues to be politicized and weaponized in order to distort the truth, which is that the DOJ, the AG, the Manhattan DA and the Assembly all critically examined this and found no there there. This suit is meritless, and we expect any fair hearing in a court of law will also bear this out.”

He also added that the statements about the book are; “false, wrong and the product of the furthest depths of right-wing paranoia.”
