The media world was shocked yesterday as the former host of the Fox News show “Tucker Carlson Tonight” and the Fox News network parted ways.
Those in the news business did not see it coming and neither did Carlson as evidenced by the sign-off on last Friday’s show. Carlson told the audience he would be back on Monday.
Earlier this month, Carlson drew in 6.5 million total viewers and 1.1 million in the demo after carrying Trump’s post-indictment speech. He consistently held the top spot as the most-watched show on cable news.
“FOX News Media and Tucker Carlson have agreed to part ways. We thank him for his service to the network as a host and prior to that as a contributor,” Fox News announced on Monday.
“Mr. Carlson’s last program was Friday, April 21st. Fox News Tonight will air live at 8 PM/ET starting this evening as an interim show helmed by rotating FOX News personalities until a new host is named.”
Twitter users wasted no time voicing their feelings about the media giant’s move to oust its top-rated opinion host.
“I just cancelled my Fox Nation subscription with the note: ‘No Tucker Carlson, no Fox Nation subscription. Goodbye.’ Who is doing the same?'” a Twitter user named Scott Morefield tweeted.
“Just canceled my subscription to Fox Nation and promptly turned the channel. Only 3 shows interest me – The Five, Jesse Watters, and Gutfled! And I can miss these without a problem. I never missed Tucker. What a loss,” another Twitter user shared.
“Just cancelled @foxnation. They asked why? I said ‘Tucker,'” read another tweet.
For many, Carlson was the only reason viewers tuned into Fox News after a shift in the network following the 2020 election.
One Twitter user posted instructions to cancel a Fox Nation subscription.
“For those seeking to cancel their Fox Nation subscription, like many are after today’s news:
If you have an iPhone, go to Settings -> AppleID -> Subscriptions and you can cancel there”
Social media influencers and other media personalities weighed in on the news of Carlson’s departure.
“BREAKING: Tucker Carlson is out at Fox News. This is the biggest mistake Fox has ever made. I don’t know the reason for the exit but the timing couldn’t be worse for Fox,” former Republican Tennessee Senate candidate Robby Starbuck said.
“BREAKING: Tucker Carlson is leaving Fox News
I hope his next gig is a $100+ million deal with Spotify or Rumble
He is a fearless warrior for truth and has one of the biggest audiences in America
This isn’t the end of Tucker,” GOP influencer DC Draino tweeted.
And Jeremy Boreing, the co-founder and co-CEO of The Daily Wire said, “The most important voice on the right just left the biggest media company on the right.
Whatever @TuckerCarlson does next, he’ll succeed.
If that something is running for president, the entire game just changed.”
What will Tucker Carlson do next? Yesterday, Megyn Kelly devoted her podcast to discussing the news with folks in the media space and concluded that no matter what Tucker does, he’ll be successful.
He has a huge following. Independent journalism in the digital sphere is so hot right now. If he goes out on his own, he won’t have advertisers or a board of directors dictating what he can and cannot say.
Watch out!
