CNN reports that Trump admin secretly obtained phone and email records of Pentagon correspondent

CNN reported Thursday that the Trump administration secretly obtained the phone and email records of its Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr.

According to CNN, the Department of Justice (DOJ) informed Starr on May 13th that prosecutors had obtained her phone and email records from June 1st to July 31st, 2017. The letter from the DOJ reportedly listed Starr’s personal and work-related email addresses and phone numbers. According to the DOJ, Starr was never the subject of an investigation and it was confirmed that the records were sought through the courts last year. It remains unclear as to when Starr’s records were ordered. It’s unknown whether the records were sought after under AG Jeff Sessions or AG William Barr.

“CNN strongly condemns the secret collection of any aspect of a journalist’s correspondence, which is clearly protected by the First Amendment,” CNN President Jeff Zucker said. “We are asking for an immediate meeting with the Justice Department for an explanation.” CNN also noted that Washington Post reporters who covered the FBI investigation into the science disprove allegations of Trump’s ties to Russia were also informed earlier this month that their phone records from 2017 were obtained. In 2018 it was disclosed by the DOJ that they obtained 2017 records of reporters from Buzzfeed, Politico, and The New York Times.
