CDC director says new mask guidance does not grant permission for widespread mask removal

Rochelle Walensky says the CDC is not granting permission for widespread mask removal, despite the new guidelines saying vaccinated people do not need to wear masks indoors or outdoors.

Just after the CDC released new guidelines for mask wearing, wherein they lifted mask mandates nearly completely for vaccinated individuals, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said it is not the time to have widespread unmasking. Walensky told ABC co-anchor Martha Raddatz, “If they’re vaccinated, they are safe. If they are not vaccinated, they are not safe. They should still be wearing a mask or better yet, get vaccinated.” In an interview with Martha Raddatz on ABC News, Walensky told the co-anchor, “We wanted to deliver the science of the individual level, but we also understand that these decisions have to be made at the community’s level.”

Walensky and other Health Officials have made it clear that the new CDC guidelines are up for individual discretion and that vaccinated people can still wear masks if they feel it necessary. Because of the new CDC guidelines, many states and local governments have updated their guidelines to be less restrictive, some removing mandates completely. Despite vaccinated people being allowed to unmask in most public areas, public transportation, hospitals, and prisons will still require all persons to wear a mask when participating.
