Catholic Bishops move to deny President Biden and other Democrats communion for supporting abortion

The US Conference of Catholic Bishops voted to advance the drafting of a document admonishing politicians and figures who support abortion rights like President Joe Biden and deny them from receiving communion, the Associated Press and New York Times report.

President Biden was asked about the vote. “The Catholic bishops are moving on this resolution that would prevent you and others that have supported abortion from receiving communion. Are you concerned about the rift in the Catholic Church and how do you feel personally about that,” a reporter asked. Biden replied “That’s a private matter and I don’t think that’s going to happen. Thank you” [Boston Herald].

The document received a lot of attention, as it will discuss whether such public pro-abortion Catholic figures, including President Joe Biden and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) are considered unworthy to receive communion. Catholic Bishops voted to approve the creation guidance which will come in the form of a “teaching document” by a vote of 168 to 55, 74% voting in favor, at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

The conference was held remotely over the course of three days and included lots of fiery debate, according to the AP. If approved, the teaching could limit and even deny Biden and other Catholics who support abortion rights from receiving communion.
