According to the Russian embassy in Turkey, Russia has received no formal information from Turkey regarding the closure of the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits to Russian vessels.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Turkey had taken such a step. Turkey, which controls the straits that connect the Mediterranean to the Black Sea, has made no public announcements about a restriction on Russian vessels using them.

According to its foreign minister, Ankara cannot prevent warships returning to a home base in the Black Sea from passing through the straits.

During a phone chat on Saturday, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan told Zelenskyy that Ankara is working to achieve a quick ceasefire, which came after Zelenskyy praised Turkey’s decision to “block” the passage of Russian warships in the Black Sea.

Following the call, Zelenskyy praised Erdogan for his efforts to “limit” the passage of Russian warships in the Black Sea: “Thank you I would like to thank my buddy Mr. President of @RTErdogan and the people of for their unwavering support. The prohibition on the passage of warships to the Black Sea, as well as major military and humanitarian support for, are critical today. That is something the residents of will never forget!”

During a phone call with his Russian colleague Sergei Lavrov on Saturday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu asked for a halt to Russian military activities in Ukraine.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry stated in a statement that Cavusoglu repeated during the phone that Ankara was willing to host the Russian and Ukrainian presidents for peace talks.

According to Interfax, Lavrov stated that Russia is prepared to work closely with all constructive forces to resolve the Ukrainian problem in the interests of peace and stability. The Turkish Presidency stated in a statement that Erdogan also expressed condolences for Ukrainians slain in the Russian strike.
