Breaking News: Chicago’s Democratic Mayor Lori Lightfoot Faces Massive Defeat In Chicago Mayorship Runoff Campaign

On Tuesday, Chicago’s Democrat Mayor Lori Lightfoot lost the re-election bid for the Democratic nomination.

The former education executive and Lightfoot’s primary opponent, Paul Vallas, gained twice the number of votes as Lightfoot.

Lightfoot was elected the Mayor of Chicago in 2019, but has been facing considerable criticism over the rising crime rate in Chicago. 

According to the reports, Vallas received 34.9% votes with first place. He has a conservative point of view when it comes to education. Additionally, he is supported by the Fraternal Order of the Police because of his stance on law and order.

On Tuesday, while casting his vote, Vallas stated:

“The city clearly is in crisis and people want a crisis manager who can come in and focus on getting things done.”

The county commissioner, Brandon Johnson, was able to secure second position with 20.2% votes. He had the support of the Chicago Teachers’ Union.

Lightfoot only secured 16.4% votes which also sheds light on her unpopularity among the residents of crime-infested Chicago. 

According to an earlier report, during the interview with The New Yorker, Lightfoot asserted that racism is affecting her results.

She claimed:

“I am a Black woman—let’s not forget. Certain folks, frankly, don’t support us in leadership roles.”

She also compared herself with Harold Washington, who got elected in 1983 as the first ever African-American Mayor of Chicago. 

She said:

“The same forces that didn’t want Harold Washington to succeed, they’re still here.”

As Lightfoot faces defeat in the primary, Chicago might just have a bright future now.
