The Buffalo Bills shared a hopeful update on the condition of their safety Damar Hamlin.
The Bills said, “Per the physicians caring for Damar Hamlin at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Damar has shown remarkable improvement over the past 24 hours.”
“While still critically ill, he has demonstrated that he appears to be neurologically intact. His lungs continue to heal and he is making steady progress. We are grateful for the love and support we have received.”
Buffalo Bills cornerback Kaiir Elam also shared some updates on Hamlin on Thursday morning.
NFL reporter Ian Rapoport said, “One thing that’s very clear from speaking to those close to him:
They are endlessly appreciative of the medical care given to Hamlin on the field immediately, then over the last 72 hours.”
“Damar Hamlin has been gripping the hands of those close to him. Another very positive sign.”
The Bills also shared Friday morning that Damar’s breathing tube was removed overnight and that he continues to progress through his recovery. They also mentioned that his neurological function remains intact and that he has been able to talk to his family and care team.
Damar Hamlin collapsed during Monday night’s game between the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Bill’s offensive lineman Dion Dawkins called out a staff member who reportedly played a major role in saving Hamlin’s life.
Sports Illustrated shared that Bills assistant athletic trainer Denny Kellington gave CPR to Hamlin that was “absolutely vital” in saving Hamlin’s life after he fell on the field from cardiac arrest, following a tackle.
While CPR was being administered, players from both teams gathered around Hamlin.
ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky prayed for Hamlin during Tuesday’s edition of “NFL Live.”
“I heard the Buffalo Bills organization say that we believe in prayer, and maybe this is not the right thing to do, but it’s just on my heart and I want to pray for Damar Hamlin right now. I’m going to do it out loud, I’m going to close my eyes and bow my head, and I’m just going to pray for him,” Orlovsky said.
“God, we come to you in these moments that we don’t understand, that are hard, because we believe that you’re God, and coming to you and praying to you has impact,” Orlovsky said.
“We’re sad, we’re angry, and we want answers, but some things are unanswerable. We just want to pray, truly come to you and pray for strength for Damar, for healing for Damar, for comfort for Damar, to be with his family, to give them peace. If we didn’t believe that prayer didn’t work, we wouldn’t ask this of you, God. I believe in prayer, we believe in prayer. We lift up Damar Hamlin’s name in your name. Amen.”
The updates on Hamlin are encouraging and inspire hope that he will make a full recovery.
The Bills are already set to play the Patriots on Sunday.
