According to a deathbed confession provided by famous film director Oliver Stone, the killing of John F Kennedy in 1963 was an inside job. Stone was approached by a guy claiming to have been a former member of the presidential security team after filming his renowned film JFK, which was sympathetic to conspiracy theories regarding the assassination.

The father, who was dying of illness, wanted to reveal a secret that he had only informed his son about – that ‘someone from his own squad… had fired on the President.’ Because of the agent’s use of “military lingo” and precise description, Stone claimed he trusted him. In reaching out to the men through a series of mysterious letters, he solely used the code name ‘Ron.’

Stone expressed his skepticism of such a claim, citing the plethora of conspiracy theories that have emerged since Kennedy was assassinated by two rifle rounds while riding in an open limousine through Dallas in November 1963.

Lee Harvey Oswald was suspected of assassinating President John F. Kennedy from the sixth story of the Texas School Book Depository, only to be shot dead two days later by a local nightclub owner with criminal ties. Since then, there have been doubts over whether Lee Harvey Oswald fired the bullets and, if so, for whom he was working. It’s also possible that at least one of the deadly rounds was fired from a nearby grassy hill.

There have been various conspiracy theories circulating about what happened that day, with everyone from the mafia to a mysterious figure on the Grassy Knoll being implicated. Stone, 69, claimed his concerns about ‘Ron’ were removed.

The director was captivated by the military language and precise details within a story that he described as ‘plausible’ and very real as a former marine in Vietnam. He decided to tell Matt Zoller Seitz, the author of a forthcoming book on Stone, the Oscar-winning screenwriter, and filmmaker whose masterpieces include Platoon, about the Vietnam War’s agony, about the man’s confession for the first time.

‘I suppose it was because he trusted me, and partly because both the father and the son had been deceased for a time,’ Seitz replies when asked why Stone waited so long. This story has never been told before. I’m the very first.’ Stone helped with the book by making himself accessible for interviews and granting Seitz unrestricted access to his large collection.

One of the more outlandish hypotheses concerning JFK’s assassination is that his wife, Jackie, was responsible for his death. Stone, whose JFK biopic embraced conspiracy theories, chose to give the agent’s confession to author Matt Zoller Seitz for the first time.

Stone’s memories of ‘Ron’ are reproduced in this book. ‘He came to me through a succession of odd letters through post office boxes,’ he says in one paragraph, adding that he ‘didn’t have any ulterior reasons.’ Everything would be delivered to a PO Box, which he would find from Bermuda.’

He presented a realistic scenario. If I were to accomplish anything like that, this is how I would go about it. In a motel in Rochester, New York, they met. ‘He stated he didn’t want money or attention,’ Stone claims. “I want you to know this comes from my conscience,” he stated something along those lines. ‘The situation he presented was really practical,’ he continues.

If I were going to do anything like that, I’d do it this way.’ You assassinate the president under the guise of security, and if the sniper or snipers who shoot him are concealed among the men who are meant to defend him, men who are completely unaware of the scheme… It makes perfect sense. ‘The concept he set forth was quite practical,’ Stone said of his discussions with the unnamed agent. And his recollection of it was quite detailed, replete with military jargon and specifics about radio conversations immediately following the gunfire.’

Stone ‘participated in what he terms coordinated death zones, where you have a rifleman stationed at multiple positions to catch victims in a crossfire in more than one direction,’ according to Seitz. The Oliver Stone Experience, a book from Abrams Books, will be released on September 13th. There is little question that the killing of President John F. Kennedy remains a case that, despite the Warren Commission’s conclusions, many people believe has never been solved.

Many claims that the commission’s findings are defective as a whole, fueling conspiracy theories and cover-up allegations. There are several theories on why the assassination happened and who actually fired the trigger. For years, Lee Harvey Oswald was thought to be the assassin who killed President John F. Kennedy, but new evidence suggests he was not.
