Biden says elementary-school girl in the audience ‘looks like she’s 19 years old’

President Joe Biden raised eyebrows on Friday when he went off prompter during a speech to military families ahead of Memorial Day weekend.

While speaking to the troops and their families at Joint Base Langley Eustis in Virginia, the president appeared to give a shout out to the young daughter of a veteran who also addressed the crowd. “I love those barrettes in your hair,” Biden said to the girl, who was sitting in the audience. “Man, I’ll tell you what, look at her. She looks like she’s 19 years old sitting there like a little lady with her legs crossed.” So many critics took to social media that “Creepy Joe” began trending on Twitter. RealClearPolitics co-founder Tom Bevan reacted, saying, “Um, wut.”

Spectator contributor Stephen Miller poked fun at the awkward expression on the face of Biden’s sign language interpreter after the remark was made, writing “When you hear it and just don’t have to interpret it.” Republican consultant Nathan Wurtzel tweeted “That’s pretty *&^%$!ed up.” In a subsequent tweet, Wurtzel joked, “I guess that explains the Lincoln Project support.” This remark from Biden comes after a history of similar remarks and actions.

While serving as Vice President, Biden stood behind Ash Carter’s wife Stephanie while Carter was sworn in as defense secretary in 2015. He then held Stephanie’s shoulders as he whispered in her ear. The same year, Biden gave Senator Chris Coons’ then-13-year-old daughter a kiss on the forehead after swearing in Coons. Biden was accused of inappropriate contact by women during his presidential campaign, with one accusation coming from Nevade lawmaker Lucy Flores, who claimed that the then-Vice President had grabbed her by the shoulders and kissed her hair during a Las Vegas campaign event in 2014. After three more women came forward to accuse him of inappropriate contact, Biden released a campaign video promising to “be more mindful and respectful of people’s personal space.”
