Biden admin decides not to sanction company building controversial Russian gas pipeline

The Biden administration has announced it will not sanction the main company building Nord Stream 2, a controversial Russian gas pipeline.

The Russian company Gazprom, the largest supplier of gas to Europe and Turkey, is the parent company of Nord Stream 2 AG, which is a registered Swiss firm. The administration will only sanction smaller companies working within the project, for instance, construction companies. Nord Stream 2 will transport gas from Russia to Germany across the Baltic Sea. State Department spokesperson Ned Price said, “Secretary Blinken underscored the US commitment to work with Allies and partners to counter Russian efforts to undermine our collective security, and in that vein, emphasized US opposition to the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.”

The State Department considered a course of action to stop the development of the pipeline. However, threatening foreign relations with other countries, such as Germany, posed a risk. In a statement, the department said, “The Biden Administration has been clear that the Nord Stream 2 pipeline is a Russian geopolitical project that threatens European energy security and that of Ukraine and eastern flank NATO Allies and partners. We will continue to underscore US strong, bipartisan opposition to this Russian malign influence project.” The spokesperson claimed that companies have been warned of sanctions if they are involved with the project.
