Recent data shows that attacks against pro-lifers have skyrocketed since the overturning of Roe v. Wade last year.
“On October 31, the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) released a list of cases across the United States, outlining violence against both pro-life and pro-abortion groups,” according to an article from Life Site News.
“We identified 135 attacks on pro-life entities and people between when the [Supreme Court opinion] leak occurred and September 24th, 2022,” the report states. “By contrast, only six cases involve pro-choice [sic] people attacked.”
In an incident that took place in Michigan, elderly pro-life volunteer Joan Jacobson was shot while canvassing a neighborhood for support for the pro-life movement in September 2022.
The group of pro-life volunteers was asking voters to oppose a proposed constitutional amendment that would guarantee the right to abortion in the state of Michigan when the shooting occurred.
The proposed legislation was ultimately passed in November 2022.
“A 75-year-old Michigan man who pleaded no contest to shooting an elderly pro-life volunteer during a heated argument over abortion was sentenced Tuesday to community service,” per Fox News reporting.
“Richard Harvey was ordered to complete 100 hours of community service and given a suspended jail sentence of two months and a delayed sentence of one year on probation.
“Harvey pleaded no contest last month to felonious assault, careless discharge of a firearm causing injury, and reckless discharge of a firearm after wounding then-83-year-old Joan Jacobson on Sept. 20 at Harvey’s home in Odessa Township.”
The Michigan man claims that the shooting was an accident and that the woman was trespassing on his property.
“I came out and she is screaming and having a great old time, and being told … at least a dozen times, ‘You’re trespassing, get off the property,'” Harvey, told a WOOD-TV reporter just days after the shooting.
He also claims to have been concerned that the elderly woman was planning to harm his wife.
“I’m thinking she’s going to smack Sharon with [her clipboard.] So without thinking, I went to club it away with the rifle and my finger was still in the trigger guard. It went off and hit her about in here,” he told the station, pointing to his right shoulder.
Jacobson says that she was leaving the property after arguing with Harvey’s wife when he shot her in the back.
“When that registered in my mind, I heard a shot, I felt some pain, and I thought he had hit me in the back,” she said. “I was just in shock. I said to myself, ‘Did I just get shot? Did he just shoot me?’”
Jacobson believes that Harvey “knew what he was doing. I think it was intentional.”
The judge in the case ordered Harvey to pay $347.19 in restitution and to avoid all contact with Jacobson.
These incidents could clearly be avoided if people tried not to get so heated. If you’re in favor of killing babies, just tell the volunteer you’re not interested in signing the petition.
If you’re against killing babies, do your part to win over support but know when to walk away from the opposition.
