AOC’s Story from the Capitol

Last week’s events at the Capitol were hectic, especially for the politicians inside the building.  Recently, some of the politicians involved have discussed what their experiences were like.  The verbal stories are about as close as the public will get to seeing what it was like inside of the Capitol building that day.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, one of the youngest members of Congress, used Instagram Live to tell about her experience.  AOC told her followers that she was scared for her life.

She also included that “There were QAnon and white supremacist sympathizers, and frankly white supremacist members of Congress, in that extraction point who I have felt would disclose my location and would create opportunities to allow me to be hurt, kidnapped, et cetera,” (NBC).

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi revealed her experience during a 60 Minutes interview this past weekend.  “Pelosi described a scene where her staff had barricaded the door, hiding under tables with the lights turned off for two and a half hours” (Zhao).  She also revealed that she believed that the mob inside of the building was specifically looking for her.  She gave a tour of parts of the Capitol during the video (Zhao).

During the time in which the politicians were moved to a safe area, some politicians were not wearing masks.  Three members of Congress that were in the room tested positive for Covid-19 and their exposure could have come from this instance (Talmazan).

Unfortunately, five died in relation to the riot.  Three people died due to medical emergencies.  One person was shot by a Capitol Police officer.  A Capitol Police officer, who was injured during the riot, also passed away (NBC).

Major fallout for the Republican party occurred after the riot.  Many involved with the Trump administration stepped down as a direct result of the riot (Hart).  President Trump has also been impeached for the second time, this time regarding what happened at the Capitol.
