Politico reported the disclosure of confidential records at a personal office used by U.S. President Joe Biden could entangle the inquiry into related documents retrieved from former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property.
On Monday, the White House revealed that the confidential files belonging to Biden were from his time of the Vice Presidency of the U.S. under former president Barak Obama. A Washington think tank that Biden often used as his personal office was the source of these records.
Biden’s special counsel Richard Sauber stated that Joe Biden’s attorneys found the records in November last year as the aforementioned personal office space was getting cleared up. The lawyers handed over the records to the National Archives, which deals with such materials.
“The White House is cooperating with the National Archives and the Department of Justice,” Sauber said in a statement.
Sauber declared it as “a small number of documents with classified markings” which were extracted from the Penn Biden Center, a think tank closely linked with the University of Pennsylvania. He revealed that the documents were being kept locked in a cabinet at that time.
“The documents were not the subject of any previous request or inquiry” and since handing them over, Biden’s attorneys have also cooperated “to ensure that any Obama-Biden Administration records are appropriately in the possession of the Archives,” he said.
CNN reported on Tuesday that Biden and his team are now “facing sharp new questions as he prepares for a summit” with world leaders in Mexico City.
According to CNN, Biden and the members of his legal team were not aware that the confidential records were extracted from his personal office. CNN was later told that the records also included top-secret files with the label, “sensitive compartmented information”.
According to Politico, “a grim realization” has “set in around the West Wing that the discovery complicates the politics — if not the legal case — surrounding the documents found at Mar-a-Lago.”
According to a report by CBS News, the former circuit judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, Attorney General Merrick Garland authorized the U.S. attorney in Chicago to examine the files and that the FBI is also looking into the matter.
The report also mentioned ten confidential documents were part of the investigation. However, an anonymous source stated that none of those documents contained nuclear secrets.
Earlier in August of last year, government officials investigated and probed the Trump estate at Mar-a-Lago following his negligence in cooperating with the retrieval of files extracted from the White House during his 2020 election loss.
The FBI retrieved large number of official documents from Trump’s Florida club. More than 100 of them were marked as confidential and some of them were labeled as top secret. The documents included sensitive information regarding Iran and China and Nuclear secrets.
“When is the FBI going to raid the many homes of Joe Biden, perhaps even the White House? These documents were definitely not declassified,” Trump stated in an elaborated statement following the retrieval of the confidential records at the think tank that took place on Monday.
Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin from Maryland stated his thoughts concerning the major differences between both cases.
“Attorneys for President Biden appears to have taken immediate and proper action to notify the National Archives about their discovery of a small handful of classified documents found in a locked cabinet at the Penn Biden Center so they could be returned to federal government custody,” said Raskin, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee.
“I have confidence that the Attorney General took the appropriate steps to ensure the careful review of the circumstances surrounding the possession and discovery of these documents and make an impartial decision about any further action that may be needed.”
Last year the Biden administration created an unreasonably huge fuss when authorities discovered confidential documents from Trump residence. The tables now have turned on the Democrats as several sensitive documents orignated from a personal office that Biden used when he was the Vice President during the Obama administration.
Now, Biden should also be interrogated the same way Trump was. Laws should be equal for every American regardless of the fact that the accused is an ex-president or the current. This whole fiasco also reveals the incompetence and corruption of the Democrats as they are trying to suppress the newly arisen situation.
