Missiles suspected to have been made by Iran struck a US army installation in Northern Iraq as well as a Kurdish news broadcaster.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, when at least a dozen “Iranian-produced ballistic missiles” hit the base, according to Governor Omed Khoshna, according to The Daily Mail.
He stated that it was unclear if the rockets were aimed towards the American embassy or the city’s airport.
Kurdish and US authorities verified there were no injuries in what they are calling a ‘outrageous attack,’ but no organization has yet claimed credit.
Marine Gen. Frank McKenzie of the United States warned of strikes in the area in December, telling The Associated Press that while American soldiers in Iraq transitioned to a non-combat mission last year, Iran and its proxies’still want American troops to leave the country.’
As a result, McKenzie predicted that “further attacks” against American bases would follow.
“We’re investigating the purported incident near Erbil,” a Pentagon spokeswoman told Axios.
According to a State Department official, the incident is being investigated by the Iraqi government and the Kurdish Regional Government.
Iran has reacted to the event. “Following the recent crimes of the phony Zionist regime and the previous announcement that the crimes and evils of this infamous regime will not go unpunished; last night, the ‘Strategic Center of Conspiracy and Evil of the Zionists’ was targeted by powerful and point-to-point missiles of the IRGC,” Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps said, according to The Jerusalem Post.
Any more “wrong” done by Israel will be met with a “harsh, decisive, and catastrophic reaction.”
Muqtada al-Sadr, a Shiite cleric and Iraqi politician, replied to the incident on Twitter. “In the name of God, Irbil is under fire from loss and treachery, as well as the agony of famine, as if Kurds were not Iraqis.” Rather, they are Iraq’s lung and an inseparable part of it,” he remarked.
Others criticized President Joe Biden on Twitter. “Biden’s vulnerability and predatory reaction appear infectious!” “BREAKING: Sky News Arabia is reporting that multiple long-range ballistic missiles were fired at the US embassy in Erbil, Iraq,” Donald Trump Jr. claimed on Twitter.
