Murkowski, a moderate Republican with a record of approaching bipartisan agreements, was one of seven Republicans in the Senate to join all 50 Democrats in voting to prosecute former President Trump in his February impeachment trial on charges of inciting the Jan. 6 attack on the United States Capitol. Trump was acquitted when the Senate vote fell 10 votes short of the two-thirds majority required to convict. Murkowski is the sole Republican running for reelection in next year’s upcoming midterm elections. Trump has pledged to campaign against the senator in Alaska. He backed Tshibaka earlier this year, and a few of the key members of Trump’s 2020 presidential reelection inner circle are serving as senior advisers on Tshibaka’s campaign as stated by the Conservative Brief.
Although Trump and the Alaska GOP have opposed Murkowski, she has the support of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the Senate GOP’s reelection branch, which has historically supported Republican incumbents seeking reelection. And senior Senate Republican leader Sen. Mitch McConnell and his campaign crew have offered to endorse Murkowski in her senate run. The Senate Leadership Fund, the largest outside super PAC aiding Senate Republicans and associated with McConnell, backed Murkowski earlier this year.
Trump stated in an email to his followers through his Save America PAC, that Lisa Murkowski is a disaster for Alaska, her vote to appoint Biden as Secretary of the Interior was a decision to eliminate long sought and authorized ANWR and Alaska employment, and Kelly Tshibaka is the ideal candidate who can defeat Murkowski. He continued to say that Kelly is a warrior who upholds Alaskan ideals and puts America first, and she has his complete and total support.
