The United States Chairman Of The Joint Chiefs Of Staff (CJOS) General Mark Milley spoke with Russia’s top military official, Chairman Of The General Staff General Valery Gerasimov on Tuesday amid high tensions between the two countries.
The two military officials discussed “several security-related issues of concern — the phone call is a continuation of communication between both leaders to ensure risk reduction and operational de-confliction. In accordance with past practice, both have agreed to keep the specific details of their conversation private” according to a JCS press release
The Russian Defense Ministry released a separate statement that read
The Russian Defense Ministry, in a separate statement, said the two generals “exchange opinions and assessments of the changing situation in security in the Eastern Europe” according to The Russian News Agency (TAAS).
This call comes after the United States and its NATO allies along with other countries have expressed concerns about Russia’s massing of troops near the Ukrainian border.
General Milley had earlier spoken with top Ukrainian military official Gen. Valery Zaluzhny on Monday about “perspectives and assessments of the evolving security environment in Eastern Europe” according to a JCS report
Secretary Of States Antony Blinken had mentioned earlier that the United States doesn’t have “clarity into Moscow’s intentions” about the troop buildup around Ukraine.
“And our concern is that Russia may make the serious mistake of attempting to rehash what it undertook back in 2014, when it amassed forces along the border, crossed into sovereign Ukrainian territory, and did so claiming, falsely, that it was provoked,”
Blinken had also mentioned in a Face The Nation interview that President Biden will “tell President Putin directly that we seek a more predictable, stable relationship…but if Russia continues to take reckless and aggressive actions, we’ll respond forcefully.”
General Milley was a subject of controversy earlier this year when a report about his call with his Chinese counterpart was published. From that report, it appeared that Milley was trying to undermine President Trump’s authority as the commander-in-chief.
