New York’s new governor Kathy Hochul added 12,000 previously undisclosed COVID-19 deaths to the state’s toll.
The additions are an attempt at transparency regarding Cuomo’s nursing home scandal during the pandemic. On March 5th, New York Health Department (NYHD) officials confirmed that Governor Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) had ordered his COVID-19 Task Force to alter and destroy parts of a report showing the true number of deaths tied to Cuomo’s COVID nursing home plans.
Contrastingly, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported a higher number of COVID-19 deaths than the state reported. After updating the death toll, Governor Hochul told MSNBC’s Morning Joe, “We’re now releasing more data than had been released before publicly, so people know the nursing home deaths and the hospital deaths are consistent with what’s being displayed by the CDC.”
She continued, “Transparency will be the hallmark of my administration.” As of August 26th, New York’s COVID-19 death toll is 55,440 and the state’s Department of Health included an updated report on nursing home deaths.
